Generation 1: Overall for the time, this was a neat era and some good games. Red and Blue were great, and Yellow was really fun. They had great ideas with their spin off games too, I know not the majority of people played Pokemon Trading Card Game but it was soo good and the Pokemon Pinball game realeased during this time remains as one of my favorites! I liked the story mostly. Like, you're a trainer starting on your journey and you're the only one who can defeat the bad guys. So you do! To a young kid that's simple enough to get really attached to. They just had a really good game and it offered an exceptionally well experience.
Compared to today, the games were really goofy. Such as the fact that they didn't properly balance the types at all, and there quite a number of glitches. But I loved how if you wanted to explore everything, you were rewarded really well. Like, new TM's, secret paths, maybe a quest that you wouldn't have known about had you not looked everywhere. And the fact that they were limited in what they could show us, made the creepy parts much creepier. I'm sure if the games were new today I wouldn't find the pokemon tower that weird. But it was at the time. Especially coupled with the fact that my classmates would make up tall tales about the games haha. I remember when my brother showed me the missingno. glitch and the glitch to get mew, I thought he was some wizard or something. It's really funny now that I look back on that time. I also thought I had a magic cheat code too when I used that built in function on the game boy color to change the color of compatitable games to like pink, or red, or even brown. Like the game boy color advertised that you can now play in all the shades of the rainbow so why wouldn't you be able to do that. I loved playing Red or Blue in different colors like yellow or green lol
Yellow remains a good experience. I was a huge fan of the anime so the fact that I got to walk around with Pikachu as if I was Ash was the best. That pikachu had the cutest expressions ever. ah it makes me want to play yellow right now haha.
Generation 2: It only gets better at this point As much as I love gen 1, I love gen 2 much much more. The theming is perfect, and you get to play gen 1 backwards! how neat is that. Some of the moments in this game were too cool. Like the Red battle being absolutly insane. And them utilizing color in these game's makes it a perfect experience. The world looks more rich with all the colors not to mention that they had more space for music and we get a clock system too. I didn't pay attention to it as a kid but I remember years later after really listening to the new themes and thinking, wow they did a good job. Like, the towns didn't lose their personality and one of my favorite themes actually is the new one for the pokemon tower. Whereas before it was downright creepy, now it's more upbeat to show that there was time between this game and the last that passed. I think they really knew what they were doing when they made the silly little quests and areas like national park. It was great!
There was so much to do tbh. This was a really large step up from the previous games, and I love them for that. It still kept the rewarding system for exploring and added so much more to do. Not to mention that we could play as Kris! Our first female MC. I loved these games more when I understood them better as I got older. I was a '98 baby so I didn't really play these as they first released but Crystal remains as one of my favorite childhood games :)
Generation 3: These were the coolest set of games released. And it's actually my favorite era because I didn't play these games after they released, well I played Ruby afterwards, but I enjoyed Emerald right away. This was the second generation so far to release such a large cast of pokemon with 135, and it really felt like it as I was playing. Because I remember thinking, oh that's new, and that's new too. (of course everything's new) but basically it was another amazing experience because this time the region had it's own identity! I loved how they introduced specific enviroments, and most pokemon were perfectly tailored to those areas. Such as Nuzleaf in the jungle area, Magcargo near the volcano, or castform by the rainy area. They really were on top of their game with this generation. Secret bases, a cool storyline with the box art legendaries, and just a slew of other fun events made it great. Being able to create memories with this generation makes me feel nostalgia as I'm reading about Hoenn. Like, I was 6 or so years old as the anime was releasing and the movies too. I was just starting collect the cards for myself as well. This was a good era too It just feels like they really respected their players, and their time too. I'm listening to the soundtrack of Pokemon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew and it's like wow, they were good at creating adventures and memories. The movies during this era were actually the best they ever released. Because Manaphy and the Mystery of the Sea was a 10/10 experience. And as much as Deoxys and Jiraichi have their faults, they're enjoyable movies as well. Aaagheirjkfn I just wish they never left this period or something
This generation contains some of my favorite spin off games to ever release actually. We got Pokemon Rangers, POkemon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team and Red Rescue Team. Later on I played Coliseum. So it was just amazing overall. I miss the first time I experienced everything in this generation The pokemon remakes were done well with FireRed and LeafGreen.
Generation 4: A great beginning to a new era. I spent a lot of time with Diamond actually. As much as these games have their faults they were so amazing. I think compared to Gen 2, these three games have some of the best theming and music to date. Each town has so much personality of their own. I like to shit on gen 6 being full 3D. But I didn't mind it at all in this game. It was done right. If it was one thing the pokemon company was always on top of, it was their sprite work. They were literally the best at it. I don't think I would remember certain pokemon as fondly had they not been portrayed the way they were. I never really got to experience trading over wifi or anything with these games but I remember being able to utilize the connection between two DS's and battle my brother all the time. Returning to these games years later, it was definitely a great experience for the time. I loved the events in this game too. So far they all had so much packed into them for you to do. The Undergroud was something I wished I experience online for, that's one thing that I think I missed out on, but only that. This game had a lot of quirks, but it was good for what it's worth! They also really excelled with their spin off games again. This time they really dove into Pokemon Ranger games and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. I loved this period a lot for that reason. HGSS were also great remakes. They did well.
Generation 5: I know how I had said I loved gen 2 a lot. But in my eyes gen 5 is the real winner. Looking back on it, I really think this was sort of a last hurrah, I took it as a love story to the people that have played their games so far. Maybe a part of the team knew this would be the last time they'd ever truly use sprited pokemon. So they put their whole back into these games. A lot of people have shit on the dev team for creating such a linear map and route system. But I think it had to be that way in order for the story to really shine in this generation. BW are the first games where I really think they come to a conclusion. Especially because of the sheer amount of things you can actually do, it's nice when the story is actually finished. I appreciate this gen for what it did. Usually older mons are available during your playthrough, and the devs are left trying to decide what you can catch during the game to make it balanced and "fair" to everyone's favorites. But I think gen 5 had the right idea where the main pokemon are available first and then you can find the other 493 in the post game. It makes you step out of your comfort zone! And for you to learn to love the new things. The base pokedex was beefed out as it was so there was no need to have old mons anyways. I just really think that was a major bonus. And if we were to talk about the designs anways, they were great. Nothing was done shoddy. Each gen has it's own theming and these pokemon fit a sort of city and nature type of area. They have their unique charm. And a lot of them went on to be everyone's favorite anyways. This generation actually made me realize what I want out of a pokemon game. I like design as much as I admire quality characters and a good story. I usually geek out over music, so that's all very important to me. Something that was really cool was that all the gym leaders actually did something for their towns. They almost acted like little mayors and as a result had a lot of charm. I thought it was fun that their gyms were functional. Like why not have residents hang out at your gym because it also serves as a restaurant or museum? haha. I massively appreciate having two good rivals. During the story Cheren struggles with making a name for himself while watching one of his bestfreinds do just that. And then we learn about Bianca and her family issues. She's not even sure if she has the same strength as her best friends, which she does actually. I mostly loved how unpredictable these games were. They often threw you into triple and rotation battles. And you often didn't have to worry about your team comp for some of the harder areas. Your main story team usually did just fine because they got to be leveled up equally. I liked the funfest missions, and having Black Tower/ White Treehollow which was pretty challenging. Taking on the Battle Subway wasn't that bad!
I learned later on that a lot of people had disdain for this era. But it is forever my favorite compared to the garbage that gets released in a few years. I had a great time with all the content in this game. I never really had to focus on the main objective and this is the only time where I enjoyed finishing the national dex. Aaahsdjkf all the additions in this game were great. I love how charming the pokemon musical was and the craziness of the pokestar studios was too fun. The thing I miss the most though was the Dream World and C-Gear. They actually felt like solid online experiences. I only got to play in the dream world for a few short months before they shut down Wi-Fi for the DSi and DS systems, but what I did experience was wonderful.
Overwall the theme of truth and ideals and examining/ deconstructing that theme in the actual gameplay was unlike anything I had played before. The climatic ending of Dragon vs. Dragon in BW was simply amazing. I loved between my rivals how they understood themselves better at the ending. The duality of Alder as a champion is my favorite too actually. He's the champion, but you see him off doing things like being on a voyage across the region and "goofing off". Once Cheren tries to scold him for not acting as a proper champion, Alder gets incredibly serious with him and discusses what he does. There's so much to love about these games, I could actually talk for hours about them. Seeing as this is my longest recap for a generation yet lol. When they introduced more large 3D areas. I thought it was amazing. Look at Skyarrow bridge and tell me how cool that looks. Imagine seeing it for the first time, and then it just continues on. Whereas before, a bridge would be a flat area, and it didn't really matter much outside of like biker battles. This game was too cool.
During this generation I actually didn't play any spin off games. So I don't know anything about those.
Generation 6: okay I admit that I was really excited for these games to release. I even went so far as to beg my mom for a special edition for Pokemon X. But in retrospect after playing them. They just don't hold up their predecessors. Like, wow fully 3D sounds very cool and impressive on paper. But that's what released? Mega pokemon were the best addition. And full player customization is nothing to snuff at. But it's like, the experience wasn't built upon. Years later now, I just felt like they went in on some features and forgot about the rest. Lumiose City is so fucking cool much like mega battles and the 3D areas. But gen 5 shits on this game. It's so sad too because this was the first time that I made friends in a pokemon game thanks to it's social aspect. The PSS was by far the best feature to ever be introduced in a game. You could send messages in real time and create trades and battles in mere seconds. That's incredible even for a 3DS game. In all honestly the story was okay. I thought the gyms were cool. And as much flack as Diantha gets for being the champion, I loved her character. What makes me angry story wise is how they dealt with Team Flare and the ending. It was cheap, and coming off the back of the previous games, I want to know what they were smoking in that office. Because wtf.
I played X for an embarassingly large amount of time..600+ hours. But like I mentioned earlier, it was only really because of PSS and my new friends. There was no other reason. It's not like the online was out of this world anyways. I never even finished the national dex because of how many pokemon there were. I wish this generation was done better. At least Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire were cool. Although those were kind of meh because of Gamefreak's decisions to cut certain content. I wish the games were better.
Generation 7: I hate this generation. They didn't do much special with the era, and I think they took a shit on their PSS system with that stupid park area. Omg I just hate that I wasted my own money on this generation. This is where I thought Gamefreak hated their players. Like seriously? what were they thinking when they released this shit. It didn't even increase in quality from last generation. In fact I don't think they tried at all. I hated the story, and the "sequels" didn't improve on the game at all. The cutscenes took me right out of the immersion. This is the first point where I questioned, how old am I? and was this made for a five year old? I could go on and on about what I hate but I'll stop because that's not enjoyable to read.
Generation 8: I would love to know what they were smoking again. Tbh I liked Sword and Shield but they made them as if they had the same limitations as they did on the 3ds. I hated that there were route borders. The big area in the middle of the game should have been the entire game. It should have been a true open world experience. This is where I said they should have kept their game in development longer. At this point it's inexcusable that $60 gets you that quality. The DLC outshines the base game at least. So I didn't really waste my money I guess?
I think Legends Arceus outshines the entire generation. Especially considering that BDSP released in such a crapper manner. I think it looks really bad, and that's like a slap in the face for generation four fans. It makes me hope and pray that they stop doing remakes. They obviously have no budget or time for a proper remake :eyeroll:
Generation 9: I have no opinions on actual gameplay 🥳 It looked like shit and I was right. Buggy ass mess of a game. If I ever played them it would be because I entered a giveaway and won.
Tears of the Kingdom is releasing in May which will be the premium experience of the year.

I no longer want to play these games :( Been a while since I last got into this topic but I think Gamefreak as a company is way too greedy for my liking. I'm glad that as a child I got to have fun and make memories with their games, tv shows, and movies. But it's not longer like that for me. I hated what they did with the anime, who cares if it looks nice. It's just not good. And I'm unhappy with the games. I think Legends Arceus was a 9/10 game and then they didn't follow up with it. Which is a let down, I felt like they created opportunities for DLC, which I honestly would have happily paid for. But then they followed up with Scar/Vio which as everyone knows was a complete mess.
I'm highly disappointed in them. And I'm dismayed that people continue to give them money. I know if I have kids of my own in the future that I would not spend my cash on a new pokemon game. I would rather get them into splatoon or mario games. Because those still are created with a high level of polish and they still somewhat respect the player. They know their fanbase has grown up and have families of their own. Their games are literally made for all ages. It doesn't hold your hand, or think that a ten year is still it's only market. I think of how Final Fantasy just got a new entry and it's absolutely wonderful, if I had a ps5 of my own I think I would have immediately bought it. As a franchise it's had many ups and downs, and it's pretty solid looking.
