Spoilers
This post is about the Season of Shattering. (+ everything else leading up to)
SO I think this season is the coolest that has been realeased yet. Up until now there were quite a lot of cute seasons like prophecy, assembly, the little prince, and so on. Abyss kind of started this more darker tone. And now the shattering is an ancient memory type of event. It's really dark. Before in the seasons, we knew that the events and memories happened in the past because there was sort of an obvious timeline.
- the timeline -
Season of Prophecy really gives us the clear jumping off point. It's set in a cave off of Isle of Dawn. In the cave with the main area, we see all these murals painted across the walls. While following these drawings we can tell that there is one person who is standing out, this is the prince or the original sky kid. This character is a part of the sky kingdom. This who I will be calling Alef who is rumored to be the prince/king.
In the cave, the murals tell us of a skid taking the trials. This is the prince and he is the first to complete the trials. They're implied to be terribly dangerous and that he was the first and only one to sucessfully complete them and survive which is why he is the prince in the first place. of course until we the player came to the kingdom. At the end of the murals it shows Alef's coronation and the spirits kind of worshipping him. This is important background information I think.
I'm going to back up and go in order now.
- in the Isle murals at the starting cave, those six stars that are falling are in fact the six elders. They've always been the elders. In fact TGC confirms that they're a seperate species from spirits and us the players.
- They're not alive when we do end up meeting them later in the game. In fact neither are the spirits. That's why they're called spirits and why we relive their memories. In the cut scene the elders exist in their own space. They are actually not in their temples at all. Which is a little weird because that begs the question about where they are really resting then. Anyways, they all fell through the clouds together, they knew each other before.
Moving on this is my take on the story of sky. The devs continue to tell us that there's no story line so it's up to each player what they make of it all~
---
Long ago, at the beginning of Sky. There was a peaceful civilization that worshiped the six ancestors and the megabird. These ancestors protected and worked with their people.
Eventually the very first sky kid falls through the clouds. This being is known as Alef. Due to the four prophets of fire, water, earth, and wind. There are spirits looking for the chosen one who will complete the trials. Two star gazers who were taking a walk watched as this star fell to the ground and rushed over to it. What they found was not a star but a child. This child would later be taken to the cave of prophecy. Where others failed these trials one was successful. Mistakeless and perfect, the one completed the tests. The tests were known as patience, resilience, balance, and bravery. Patience in order to avoid darkness. Resilience to persevere any troubles thrown at them. Balance to make sure they do not fall to one side only, such as darkness or light. And bravery in order to not falter.
After Alef finishes the trials his journey leads him to the realm of the Hidden Forest. This is where he looks for more power after his coronation. And that is exactly what he finds here. Happening upon the dark stones Alef realizes the power they hold. Being able to take and store light they are quickly adopted across the realms. These dark stones are made into power diamonds which can be installed in devices used to open doors, make bridges, and make boats fly. Technology flourishes to the point that society doesn’t exist without them. A new age dawns, called the dark stone era. During all of this Alef leads the civilization to a golden age and is crowned King. With good intentions he continues the production of dark stones and it is here where he changes his name to Resh. Soon after he takes Eden for himself and builds a giant city with massive walls and an castle.
Not realizing the damage he is causing, he is ignorant to the fact that he is draining too much light from the kingdom. Water starts to turn polluted and waste is created. In the Hidden Forest acid rain starts to fall. And strange plants grow everywhere in dark corners. The light creatures that live in the realms become conscious of this new threat and attack. Unfortunately for them the citizens of sky and King Resh himself grew powerful. This turns into a war at the fortress in the Golden Wasteland. Resh posessing new power creates destructive weapons and ultimately wins the war. After this victory is when light creatures become enslaved. Somewhere around this time the giant power diamond of Eden is created in order to better serve the citizens in Eden.
Leading up to the events of the shattering. Resh loses their mind, obsessed with power he sees nothing else. No longer was he influenced by the trials, now he was nothing more than those creatures he hoped to take advantage of. Being an unstable being, the balance between light and darkness is destroyed. No one is there to protect that fine line. The giant eden power diamond grows more and more unstable and finally causes a massive explosion that forever alters the sky kingdom. Everything is laid bare in its path, with Resh being the closest he no longer resembles his kingly form and is reverted back to that child like being that once fell from the sky. At this point we do not know what happened to the spirits after this event. It is assumed that the kingdom was completely destroyed and the citizens either perished or tried to adapt in different ways.
Sometime in the far future that same megabird that I briefly mentioned decides to create a new being. A being that will not becomes a failure. One that they hope could vanquish the darkness once and for all and restore light back to the now dilapidated kingdom. That being will be known as “A child of Light” which is us th player character.
general notes~
- Alef is the first letter of the hebrew alphabet. The letter symbolizes unity and openness. "Aluf" comes from this letter and in context it means a [military] "general", or a "champion", and implies the ones greatness. Alef who is someone I consider to be the Eden Elder, is said to have had his own victories greatly celebrated in the Valley of Triumph.
- Resh which is Alef's later second name is the twentieth letter of the Hebrew alphabet. This letter represents wickedness which contrasts with the previous more positive name of Alef. It can be inferred that since Resh is the antagonist of the later half of the storyline, "alef" is the name for his pure uncorrupted form and "Resh" is the name for his corrupted body. The king was most definitely affected by the dark stone technology.
After the context, you can obviously tell where season of shattering falls into place now right? Being ancient memories and ones that we see with our eyes rather than experiencing and unlocking. It is a very imporant season. The first memory was of a great many jellyfish ascending in the skys.
This is the memory poem:
At first I thought it meant that they were caught in the storm. But no, not right away. I think they either were attempting to ascend as normal light creatures, or the vast amount of light from the crystal lulled them closer. I think that now because the poem mentions light not being warm. As in, it wasn't actually as inviting as it seems. There is no energy, just stillness. They are lost to the void, the void being the area that the crystal now serves.
To me I think this just shows that not only us the player have visited this place, but it was unfortunately common for creatures in the kingdom to be here.
You're the only being who ascends (or tries to). But actually it is all the creatures. That's what this poem is telling us. Especially telling us the line about the final moments of stillness.
Next is of Dark Crabs and floating darkness. These are agressive creatures who reside in the waste waters around sky. They are corrupted with darkness flakes. This is their poem:
Once again, it sounds like they were being entranced to go to the crystal much like how the jellyfish felt like coming here. This tells us that they recognize something still. They're not mindless creatures.
What was that familiar glow? It's the eye of eden or the power diamond. Crabs much like krills move and attack skids because of their light. It is something they used to know. Since the power diamond is a horrible combination of light creatures, technology, and light. Obviously these crabs would also be drawn into it's glow. It's a strange brilliance. I think to power it, no source of light was discriminated against. They were all going to be absorbed anyways.
The third memory shows us a large flock of mantras. The poem:
Flowing to bright beacons.. more creatures wanted to go to the crystal. These creatures trusted their instincts until it was too late. There was no turning back, a merciless harness in this context means attacked and made use of.
As the eye or the power diamond was starting to malfunction, they were going towards the light it emitted like it was just another normal day. As the power shards grew closer to touching their bodies they were starting to turn to stone. Having the light so ruthlessly sucked out of them changed their bodies. I'm thinking that these memories are what is left from these poor creatures that didn't know what was happening. We're peering into their last memories.
Just two days ago the fourth memory was revealed, however we still have not gotten the accompanying poem to go along with it yet. In this memory we can see three large krill slowly creeping closer to a currently shattering power diamond which is the eye of eden. It's craking down the middle almost. As I said earlier, these krills aren't themselves at all. They're darkness beasts. (I actually have a seperate theory on what they actually are though). They would never understand what's going on. And I think these krills don't die. They actually get even more brainwashed from the power diamond. This diamond holds the largest amount of light in the kingdom and I think they get brainwashed by it. So that now in the world with us the sky kids, if they even catch a glimpse of our light they get entranced and cannot see anything else. We're like a carrot on a stick.
It here !!
so yes, they are seeing something in the diamond that is drawing them closer. It's like a moth to a flame, all they see is that light. These krills are hungry for what was taken away from them. In the first half I interpret it as they are the dark reflection of light creatures. In the second half, because they are always moving and protrolling, they are trying to fill that empty pit that is caused by their own existance.
They were being enticed by the diamond much like the other creatures. I don't think they necassarily die.. ever. Which is why there are krills before PNR. They just kind of stayed because they are darkness. And they're just trying to fill a hole that can't be filled.
Memory #5 poem, the whales.
Vocab first.
Sunder means 'split apart'. Or ex: "the crunch of bone when it is sundered".
Another example: in sunder, "apart or into pieces".
What we see in this memory are giant Whales. Of the few whales we get to see in the game we can tell that there are different species, if by a slight difference. There's the giant (I won't say king) whale of Eden who is enormous and breaks a column and ascends alongside us. And in Sanctuary there is one big boy with an armored face and scales. These guys though, they are a little different. So we can assume that a subspecies died.
With the biggest in the middle holding a winged light, it reinforces a side theory I have that these are not frozen memories. The Shattering memories are like snapshots and everytime we meditated to view them, the power diamond was sharing a light creatures moments with us. I think before this thing shattered, it malfunctioned causing people/objects to disappear. I think actually that the eden crystal worked like a beacon, or that was the intended use, which "held" the inner light of skids or light creatures for them. When it got corrupted, it tried to do self repairs by absorbing others, which trapped victims inside. I think there was always something "there" however after becoming twisted the crystal filled that void when it shattered. It naturally filled it with a memory, be whatever it absorbed.
Back to the whales, since they are such large light creatures, it was like a feast by the crystal. The first line I interpreted was that it meant "the call to light" like the game tells us about once we're in eden. I assume it was a false light that drew creatures towards the crystal. It was the moments directly before shattering, making ascension impossible and the Light “beyond reach”. Once it shatters it immediately twists and distorts the whales, with such large amounts of light being siphoned. It took that from them creating a horrible misalgamation of their bodies. It all happened in a flash judging by what the second line says. Scouring has many meanings, but I think in this context rapid fits the most. So maybe their cries for help were swallowed up in little time. Leaving silence in it's wake. This one is one of the saddest moments.
This is the last memory, the elders.
So the Elders were there at the edge, moments before disaster. I think any disagreements between them all were cast aside because this thing blowing up was a life or death situation. The stars (elders) were under pressure to fix this problem, but couldn't and they were reaching out towards anything that could help. Knowing what happened after shattering, they took the knowledge of this event with them. Resh takes the brunt of this event and is absorbed into the diamond.
I think the idea of pocket dimensions and voids is so true for the shattering event. Every place in sky has this sort of liminal space type of thing going on. After ascension for us the players, we enter the crystal void. This is where Resh is trapped. He doesn't think of himself of a king anymore, he's splintered off and is left as a child. Actually he's less of a being than when he first arrived to sky. This is why we hug him, to remind him he's not alone. Afterall I believe we're all just tiny pieces of him, we get sent off into the kingdom to continue what Resh was supposed to do all along.
The reason that the Elders give us gifts and can meet us in Orbit is because they're not dead. They recognize that we can help change the future of sky. There might come a day where we can rescue all of the elders, so they are putting their trust in us right now. Each of their temples are their personal confinement voids. This memory shows us how their masks became broken. Each time we visit we're offering our warmth and light to fix them. :)
-
One sad final note I have. Because the elders had no time to react, and convened in such a quick manner at eden. I think all disagrements between people in the realms never got properly resolved. I imagined that for a long time there was this very heavy and negative energy throughout the kingdom. People were previously at war with each other afterall...and then most died.

Memory #5 poem, the whales.
The distant call beyond reach
Echoes swallowed in a scouring silence
Empty light scattering the fragments
Of a spirit sundered in the break

Bare at the precipice
Unseen fractures crumble in the chasm
The stars under fathomless weight
Reaching to light and to dark
Carrying memory of all that was held

Reaching to light and to dark
Carrying memory of all that was held
