I'm continuing reading The Time When We Were Young
So far the story is that a woman is reminded of her past when she visits home and is drawn into the fictional world she created as a teenager. In that world the versions of people she knows are the way she wants them to act. Her mom is loving and caring, and opposite of how she is in real life. Her brother is still alive, her parents are not divorced. She's in a relationship with her high school crush. And she is still on good terms with her best friend.
I'm at the recent chapter and it's so sad that I feel melancholic. When Ahn Young went back to her story world the goal from the piece of paper was three lines she had to hear from one of the characters. She didn't know why she would be crying since she says her tears dried up years ago. One of the characters left her confused when he said he finally fulfilled his promise, and she needed to stay healthy and happy. In the moment she didn't know why he'd say such words to her. It wasn't until two days later and her boyfriend handed a box to her from the character. The reason why she got this was because that character left the country, so she would not be seeing him for a while. Once she looked upon the contents a rush of memories came gushing back to her.
There was a message and some dried flowers. The flowers were forget-me-nots. In her memories she was childhood friends with this character although she forgot this past they had together. Her mother and this childs mother were friends so naturally they were introduced and hit it off. Sadly they couldn't spend time together forever. There came a day where they had to part because his family was moving away. It made her really upset but they promised to continue looking at the stars together. When this character met her two days prior they trekked up a hill to look upon the glimmering stars of the city night view. And he mentioned that he finally fullfilled his promise
Although the paper led her to believe she would be crying about a man. In truth because she came back in time to her teenage self. She was crying because her mother loved and truly cared for her. When she woke up after completing the goal she met with her mother in real life for dinner. When I first looked at the scenes it felt hopeful. Maybe her and her mother would come to an understanding and properly reconnect. That all comes crashing down however because before she gets home her mother calls her to give some bad news. She wanted to know if MC could offer them some money to help with her step dad's failing company. Everything is shattered. Could her mother share proper love? I guess not. Chapter 68 left me with a bitter feeling.
It hurts worse because ah young obviously didn't want to be stuck in that moment any longer. She wakes up in the other world and she spends a day with the mother she created when she was young who was exactly who she wanted her to be. it leaves her with a lot of conflicting emotions
when she wakes up again that's when she decides she needs to have a chat with her mother. It wasn't right that she made her feel like it would have been better if she had died instead of her brother. Or that she wasn't a proper guardian when she really neeeded to rely on her
That's one thing that makes me cling to this story. it's not all silly and laced with nostalgia. It's sad, and it makes you think about how you would approach having a second chance. Would you make up with your ex best friend, or reconnect with an old crush?
