I'm so glad my political stance changed.
It's like, I never had horrible views. i/e being racist, fascist, or homophobic (there are a lot of bad opinions when you don't act like a normal person actually). But if I compare 2016 to 2023 I'm better off
In 2016 that was the year I turned 18 which also coincidentally was my first election year. When it came time to pay attention it was hillary vs. trump vs. bernie sanders, but at that point there was no chance for sanders so really it was hillary against trump (he dropped out and endorsed clinton anyways). I assumed hillary was in the lead so I voted for her. I think I remember quickly brushing up on their policies and I was like, well she seems good I guess?
I didn't really do my due diligance as an american citizen. It's like, we all learn about our presidents in elementary school so I should have made the asumption that if she's married to a president who comitted war crimes and some other activites then she is also not a good candidate. But I know for a fact that I thought omg woman president !!1@!
I'm thinking about hillary specifically because she made a public post about how it's a shame that greta gerwig or margot robbie didn't get nominations even though the barbie movie was such a box office hit. It just sunk into me that all she's ever done is pander and be obsessed with the optics. Like Lily fucking Gladstone is a native american woman who won an award this year! that's HUGE news. But all this woman thought about was her fellow white woman. Boo-hoo! they got snubbed. As if they won't get a pity award come next year for the 2024 awards season. It happens every time. like, this person has a phenomenal performance but can't win because so-and-so didn't get their award last year, and the reason is because someone else didn't get their award the previous season. It's a constant moving finish line. The committee is such a baby institution.
The reason I say I changed for the better is that I'm showing up for elections. I read up on potential policies. And taking a presidential candidates promise with a grain of salt is the best I can do. Joe Biden ran on free community college, eliminating student loan debt, and he talked a lot about the keystone pipe. All of which he didn't fullfill. For me my top picks this year are between Cornell West and Marriane Williamson. Marriane isn't really a strong contendor for me, but I think if I hear that she's polling ahead I might give her my vote in order to ensure one of the two dinosaurs doesn't make it back to office.
The reason I really like Cornell West is that he has a history of fighting for civil rights. I feel as if he's got a strong background. To me I think all of his talking points are rooted in truth. That's actually what his website says under the banner, "Movement rooted in truth, justice, and love".
This is what I liked seeing the most:
- wealth tax + end all tax loopholes
- abolishing homelessness, and poverty
- establishing institutions to fund public and green infrastructure
- mandatory six months of parental leave + free national pre-k childcare
- breakup of monopolies + banning of corporate stock buybacks
- ending the use of credit scores for decisions associated with finance, housing, and employment
- greater protections for workers who attempt to unionize
- end all pay discrepencies based on race, gender identity, disability status, etc. (this times a thousand)
- establish a federal commission to institute a four-day work week. Along with this he states wanting a minimum wage of $27 that increases corresponding to job level and etc.
This post would be too long. But basically he's such a desireable candidate. Especially because he later states that he will call for a ceasefire in gaza and he hopes to dismantle the united states empire. He will also try to slash the bloated military budget (which is something I feel strongly about. What in the fuck do they need all of those trillions of dollars for that they can never accurately place?). Another bonus is that he's after the funding that goes into Israel. What do those assholes need taxpayer money for? They don't deserve a free healthcare that is paid by citizens here. Also he wants to end funding to nations that comitt war crimes.
GOD I can't sing his praises enough. Fuck it, I think I will vote third party. That would make me feel better.
